EE is recalling all of the free power bars it customers earlier this year over safety concerns following a limited recall in August.
Any EE customer was eligible for the device, while non-subscribers could purchase one for £20. As part of the promotion, any power bar could be exchanged for an identical fully charged unit at an EE retail store.
The power bars were popular, but certain versions were recalled after one customer suffered severe burns after her unit caught fire in the middle of the night, prompting an “urgent investigation.”
The operator says all versions are now to be withdrawn after that investigation identified a “very small number” of incidents over overheating.
“We’re recalling all EE Power Bars. This is just a precaution, but we want to make sure all our customers are safe,” a spokesperson told TechWeekEurope “If you have a Power Bar, you should stop using it straight away and hand it in to one of our stores.
“We are taking this action because we are aware of a very small number of further incidents where Power Bars have overheated in circumstances that could cause a fire safety risk.”
All eligible customers will receive a £20 voucher when they return their power bar to an EE store, but EE has not revealed and if and when the programme will be restarted, saying it is focused on the recall and its customers’ safety for now.
