Talented hackers can keep the large corporations and whole governments on their toes. They sabotage the media agencies, break websites, steal our money and personal data.

But the hackers who really capture the imagination of the public are freedom fighters and digital anarchists, people who have an agenda besides making money. From the early days of the Legion of Doom to the rise of the Anonymous movement, we are fascinated by geeks on the wrong side of the law.
