Is Windows 10 Mobile Arriving Next Week?

Microsoft has revealed that the long-awaited version of Windows 10 for mobile devices is set to arrive “soon”, with some reports even saying it could launch next week.

The information comes from a tweet from the official support account for Lumia and Nokia-branded devices.

“Win 10 Mobile will become available soon. Lumia 950 & 950 XL ship with Win 10, w/ additional devices to follow shortly. ^MS,” the @LumiaHelp account tweeted over the weekend.

Microsoft had previously said that smartphone users would be able to upgrade their handset to Windows 10 in December, before then pushing back the OS update until “early 2016”.

Coming soon?

Following the LumiaHelp tweet, an anonymous source purporting to work inside Microsoft told technology blog NokiaPowerUser that Windows 10 would arrive on select devices by January 12.

Microsoft is bringing a range of updates and improvements to Windows 10 Mobile, including the all-new Microsoft Edge web browser, and Windows Hello, which allows users to sign into their devices using face and iris recognition software.

Initial previews of the software released to users back in December were met with extremely negative feedback, however, with many reporting that said that it failed to install or, if they could get it installed, caused an error massage about a lack of storage no matter how much free space was available.

Microsoft has said that the upgrade will be made available to those users running Windows 8.1 Denim (version 8.10.14219.341, or higher) and with 8GB of internal memory, which it says is the majority of Lumia devices currently on the market today.

As well as the Lumia 950 and 950 XL mentioned in the tweet, the Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 635 (1 GB RAM), Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930 will all be able to upgrade.
