Yahoo Mail Revamped With iOS, Android And Windows 8 Apps

Yahoo has released a new version of Yahoo Mail along with native apps for iPhone and Windows 8 and an upgraded Android application, as it seeks to wrest users away from rival services like Gmail and Outlook.com.

The struggling Internet giant said it wants to take email “back to its roots” and claimed the overhauled Yahoo Mail will be fast, easy and available anywhere.

The native applications are available on their respective digital marketplaces from today, with the web-based version rolled out to most users in the next few days. iPad users will have to make do with the existing web app though.

Increasingly, we’re all on the go and email is one of the key ways we stay connected,” said Yahoo. “No matter what platform you’re on, you’ll have a consistent Yahoo! Mail experience. For big screens, the experience is optimised for composing messages and managing your inbox. For small screens, we have focused on providing an experience that lets you easily monitor and triage.”

Mobile users can organise emails easily, star important messages and add and resize image attachments directly within the app.

Yahoo promised the intuitive features and speed of its applications will save 36 million minutes every day. The iPhone and Android applications look almost identical to the recently-launched Gmail iOS application, although the Yahoo app has far more purple.

CEO Marissa Mayer has made mobile a top priority as she seeks to revive the fortunes of the company after replacing Scott Thompson earlier this year.

“Email is the ultimate daily habit. It’s often the first thing we check in the morning and the last thing before going to bed,” said Mayer. “Why? Because it’s one of the simplest and most basic forms of communication.

“You’ve told us loud and clear that you want fewer distractions when it comes to email. You want to quickly login, communicate, and get on with your day.

“Starting today, the new Yahoo! Mail is fast, easy and available anywhere you go. These improvements will be available on all major platforms: Web, Windows 8, iPhone/iPod touch and Android.”
