Tizen-Powered Samsung Gear S Comes With Curved Screen And 3G

Samsung’s new flagship smartwatch will allow users to make phone calls directly from the device thanks to an in-built 3G connection.

The Samsung Gear S is capable of making voice calls and sending and receiving SMS messages, while Bluetooth and Wi-Fi allows communications to be forwarded from a connected smartphone. The Korean manufacturer claims users will be able to freely switch between all these connections.

Calendars, emails and other notifications can be viewed on the Gear S’ 2 inch curved AMOLED display, which promises to show information in a single view thanks to its conversation view and condensed font options.

Other standalone applications include health and fitness apps such as S Health and turn by turn pedestrian navigation. The device is powered by a dual core 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory, while it uses the Tizen operating system.

“The Samsung Gear S is set to redefine the idea of the smart wearable device and the culture of mobile communication, enabling people to live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime,” boasts Ines van Gennip, marketing director of Samsung UK’s IT and mobile division.

The smartwatch is the latest Tizen-powered wearable to be released by Samsung, following in the footsteps of the Samsung Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit, which were unveiled earlier this year at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

The company is hoping to establish leadership in the market before Apple makes its widely-expected entry into the wearable sector with the iWatch, which could be unveiled on 9 September alongside two new versions of the iPhone.

By using the ‘S’ suffix, Samsung could be positioning its latest smartwatch as a direct competitor to the iWatch in a similar fashion to the Samsung Galaxy Tab S, which will compete with the iPad. The Samsung Galaxy Alpha was launched earlier this month to combat the threat of any new iPhone.
