Microsoft Adds Network 3D Printer Support For Windows 10 IoT Core

Microsoft has added support for 3D printers from the likes of Makergear and Pritnrbot to the Windows 10 IoT Core platform.

The Network 3D Printer app connects 3D printers via Wi-Fi and lets multiple Windows devices link up across a network. 3D printers will act like any other network device, such as a scanner or wireless mouse, which can then be simply added on to the PC.

Windows 10 IoT Core is targeted at small footprint, low cost devices such as gateways or the Raspberry Pi.

Microsoft will also be releasing tailored versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise for industrial and embedded systems like ATMs, retail point of sale, handheld terminals and industrial robotics.

“We are excited to work with our ecosystem partners and users to grow the list of supported printers,” said Billy Anders, Windows IoT director of program management, “Whether you are printing your latest creation or building your own 3D Printer, Windows 10 provides the best 3D printing experience.”

Microsoft included a 3D printing app in Windows 10, the aptly-named Microsoft 3D Builder, but says that the new launch will support other services too.

A recent report from Gartner predicts 3D printers are set to become a common presence in homes and businesses. Analysts forecast shipments will more than double every year between 2016 and 2019, reaching more than 5.6 million.

Overall, worldwide shipments of 3D printers will reach 496,475 units in 2016, up 103 percent from the predicted 244,533 units in 2015.
