Interoute Snaps Up Vtesse To Extend UK Cloud Footprint

European cloud services provider Interoute has announced the acquisition of UK metro and WAN network operator Vtesse for an undisclosed amount.

The Hertfordshire-based firm, which counts companies including IBM and Redstone as partners and Lloyds TSB, Poundland, Friends Provident, Invesco, DEFRA and the AA as customers, will allow Interoute to bring its Interoute VDC cloud service and Enterprise Unified ICT portfolio to the UK for the first time.

“When you look at the options for European businesses wanting to take advantage of flexible, scalable cloud infrastructure, they are often limited to the public cloud providers who think Europe can be served by one European data centre location connected by the public internet,” said Gareth Williams, Interoute CEO.

“This provides a highly resilient, secure low latency Cloud platform that businesses everywhere can benefit from.”

Widening the net

Interoute says that Vtesse’s network is one of the largest in the UK, connecting 55 Data Centres and 48 major towns and cities in England, Scotland and Wales, with its main hub just outside of London at its 2,700m2 Tierthree Data Centre.

This facility is capable of accommodating 877 racks at 5Kw each via a 5Mw power supply, making it an ideal site for colocation and disaster recovery back-up for Interoute’s London City data centres.

Interoute’s acquisition means it is able to add a twelfth data centre and 7000km of UK network to its existing network, said by the company to be over 60,000km, and allow it to deliver a highly resilient, secure low latency cloud platform to businesses.

“Over the past years Vtesse has provided enterprises, system integrators, carriers and cloud and data centre operators with a range of solutions from our data centre and extensive UK network,” said Aidan Paul, chairman and founder of Vtesse.

“Becoming part of Interoute will give these customers access to the extended portfolio of solutions and international reach of Interoute, opening new opportunities and new markets.”
