Northampton Gets CityFibre 1Gbps FTTP Broadband Network

Businesses in Northampton will soon be able to access speeds of 1Gbps through a 45km fibre network built by CityFibre.

CityFibre does not provide broadband services itself, but instead sells its services on a wholesale basis to third parties. In Northampton, it is working with local firm dbfb, which is also a partner for CityFibre’s network in nearby Milton Keynes.

Northamptonshire County Council believes the development will help it achieve its goal of countywide superfast broadband coverage by the end of 2017 and support its startup community.

Northampton FTTP

“For the many startup businesses in Northampton, having a market leading internet connection will make all the difference to their success and allow them to compete on a global-scale with other digitally-advanced businesses,” said Paul Griffiths, Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce.

CityFibre operates nearly 40 networks across the UK and bought KCOM’s national fibre infrastructure for £90 million last year. It often builds networks for local councils who serve as an anchor tenant before building out to serve residential and business communities who can subscribe to 1Gbps broadband through third party partners.

Most recently it agreed a tie-up with rural FTTP provider Gigaclear and revealed Reading as another one of its ‘Gigabit Cities’.

“The council has already shown its commitment to improving digital infrastructure and we hope that our investment will help Northampton reach its targets even faster,” claimed CityFibre CEO Greg Mesch. “Pure fibre networks like these will one day be common-place but until then, Northampton and its businesses will be able to enjoy a huge digital head start on the competition.”
