Virgin Media has extended its Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with EE, meaning it will use the operator’s network to offer mobile services to its three million customers.
The partnership dates back to 1999, when Virgin Mobile became the world’s first MVNO after securing a deal with what was then known as One2One.
Virgin Media said it opted to continue with EE because of its reputation, flexible and technologically advanced MVNO platform and the strength of its 2G, 3G and 4G coverage.
TechWeekEurope understands that although discussions have taken place regarding the provision of 4G services, the extension to the MVNO agreement will have no immediate impact on the services and tariffs that will be offered by Virgin Media.
Tesco Mobile, which uses O2’s network to deliver its services, announced last week it planned to become the first MVNO to offer 4G tariffs. EE currently has more than 25 MVNO customers, including Phones4u’s LIFE Mobile and The People’s Operator, and recently announced it is to replace Vodafone as BT’s mobile partner.
“We’re delighted that following a competitive industry tender, Virgin Media has again chosen to partner with EE and build on our longstanding and successful relationship,” says Gerry McQuade, chief marketing officer of non-consumer at EE. “By choosing the EE network, Virgin Media will ensure its customers and around 14,000 employees continue to have access to the UK’s biggest and fastest mobile network.”
