Google Offers Free Drive Storage For A Quick Security Check

Google is marking Safer Internet Day with an offer to encourage its users to be more conscious of their security provisions.

The company is giving away 2GB of free Google Drive storage to anyone who carries out a security audit on their account today.

The Security Checkup is free to carry out and takes only a few minutes, giving users a review of their account recovery options, connected devices, services with permissions on their account, and 2-step verification settings.

Once completed, the extra storage is then permanently gifted to use with whatever you want.

Safe and sound

This marks the second year in a row that Google has provided such a service, which last year was valid for a week.

The offer is open to both consumer and business users, the latter of which may well benefit from taking a quick security check to ensure they stay sae online.

A recent DCMS survey found that 74 percent of small businesses and 90 percent of major businesses in the UK have suffered a security breach within the last year.

Google has been aiming to boost the security and privacy options it provides for its users in recent months, as it looks to address concerns and customers needs.

Last year, it launched a specialised ‘My Account’ hub to make it easier for users to change and understand their security and privacy settings, after admitting most people don’t feel they have sufficient control over “these important decisions.”

The hub provides the ability to choose what information is shared with Google and used for different services, which apps and websites are connected to a particular account and how relevant ads are served up.

Users can also take privacy and security check-ups that provide step-by-step guides to the most important privacy and security settings.
