Mid-Range Xperia E5 Looks To Camera To Revive Sony’s Mobile Fortunes

Struggling Sony hopes the mid-range Xperia E5’s camera capabilities and long battery life will help it expand its smartphone market share amid intense competition from other Android manufacturers.

The 5 inch device is powered by a quad-core MediaTek processor, Android M and 1.5GB of RAM, while there is 16GB of internal storage that can be supplemented by up to 200GB thanks to an external MicroSD card slot.

Available in black or white, the Xperia E5 eights 147g and is 8.2mm thick.

But it’s in imaging that Sony hopes the Xperia E5 will stand out. It had a 13 megapixel rear camera and a five megapixel front facing lens, both of which analyse conditions to determine what scene or object the user is capturing and change the settings accordingly.

Sony also says a refreshed user interface, and a ‘smart cleaner’ that works in the background to improve battery life by removing unused processes and cache data, will make the Xperia E5 easier to use.

“Xperia E5 is a no-compromise approach to smartphone capability at this section of the market” said Sony’s Tsutomu Sato. “It’s the perfect device for those seeking affordable access to the performance, camera technology and design more often associated with high-end mobile devices.”

Imaging and battery life were the main features Sony was keen to emphasise at the launch of its most recent flagship handset, the Xperia X, back at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February.

Samsung is the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, while other Android players Huawei, Oppo and Vivo are also among the top five according to figures from IDC.
