Green Grid experts from Dell and Sun will show how to run data centres within economic limits and obey environmental regulations at a virtual conference this week.

The power demands of data centres have become a major concern to IT managers, and ways to reduce costs and meet the green agenda will be top of the agenda at BrightTalk’s Next Generation Data Center summit, held online on 30 July.

As well as Green Grid presenters from Sun Microsystems and Dell, the event will have a presentation from British Computer Society (BCS) expert Liam Newcombe, on the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres, introduced in January to encourage IT directors to use best practices.

The recession is driving green technology investment, and an online interactive event is a cost-effective way to keep up, said James Harris, BrightTALK’s vice president of the technology sector: “It’s better than a physical conference in some ways. Everyone can ask questions, and there is no problem with the capacity of the venue, no matter how many people want to join.”

The event begins at 10am UK time, and gives the audience a chance to access experts round the world, with a focus that shifts with the time-zone, said Harris. Early sessions will address a mainly European audience, with more US-centric issues coming up in the later sessions, as late as 10pm UK time.

Practical advice will come from leading science institution, the US Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Italian cement firm Colacem. Other issues include data recovery and protection. All the presentations are given live, and the audience can interact after a simple free registration – and share the events later with contacts and colleagues.
