Data centre provider Equinix is investing more than £63 million ($97m) into building a large-scale data centre in Sydney, Australia.
The build will be Equinix’s fifth data centre in the country, and its fourth in Sydney, with Equinix claiming the data centre is necessary to meet growing demand.
The managing director of Equinix Australia, Jeremy Deutsch, said that the data centre, called SY4, will let Australian customers “take advantage” of hybrid cloud architectures and the Equinix Cloud Exchange.
Deutsch said: “The new facility will ensure that we continue to deliver on our promise to help businesses safeguard their mission-critical data, aid growth and rapid scalable deployment through our global footprint, and with the highest levels of security and operational reliability.”
SY4 will be located close to Equinix’s SY1/2 and 3 campus, and will provide 3,000 cabinets once fully completed. Initially, just 1,500 cabinets are scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2016.
Equinix also reported first quarter revenues this week of £417 million ($643.2m), a 1 percent increase over the previous quarter and an 11 percent rise over the same quarter last year.
“Our year is off to a strong start,” said Equinix CEO Steve Smith, “with demand for our global interconnection platform driving strong performance in all three regions resulting in both quarterly revenues and adjusted EBITDA significantly above the top end of our guidance ranges.”
This quarter was Equinix’s first operating as a real estate investment trust (REIT), and its Interconnect data centres services surpassed £64.8 million ($100m) for the first time.
Last week, Equinix cut the ribbon to its sixth London-serving data centre, in Slough.
The LD6 IBX building is claimed to be the UK’s first purpose built Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) gold-accredited energy efficient data centre. The opening comes after IBX data centre openings in in New York, Melbourne, Singapore and Toronto.
