Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade to Windows Vista, 7 and 8 systems from 29 July, Microsoft has confirmed, with users able to ‘reserve’ their download ahead of time.
A Windows icon has appeared in the system of tray in many compatible devices and invites users to submit their interest in receiving the update. If this is done, a notification will be issued when the download is ready and a convenient installation time can be scheduled.
Presumably, this will help Microsoft predict demand and cope on launch day, but it will also ensure as many people as possible are aware of the free update. After all, the company has a stated ambition of having one billion devices running Windows 10 within the next two to three years.
It is hoped the platform will remedy many of the criticism of Windows and Windows Phone by offering a consistent experience across multiple machines.
Windows 10 heralds the return of the Start Menu, the introduction of Cortana and the Microsoft Edge Browser, features support for biometric authentication and Continuum ensures the operating system is optimised for different types of inputs.
Last month Microsoft revealed details of a number of developer tools designed to make the process of creating and porting software for Windows 10 much easier, ensuring a wide range of apps for consumers and enterprises.
Windows Insiders have been testing preview versions for a number of months now, with their feedback used to determine which features should be added or removed and to stamp out bugs.

I'm not going to upgrade to Windows 10..ever. I've recently picked up software for FREE at http://upgradewindows.info and now my computer is running like it is brand spankin' new after doing a pretty fast scan, and frankly there is no point in getting and relearning an entirely new OS when I don't have to. Even though Windows 10 is free (thanks Microsoft), it’s going to have to take up a ton of space on my computer to install an ENTIRELY new Operating System. I know how tiring it can be to use your computer system when you are loading slow on every website, but since I don't have that problem anymore I don't need to upgrade.
