Samsung Promises 64-Bit Chips For Galaxy Smartphones

A senior Samsung official has suggested the next Samsung Galaxy smartphone will be powered by a 64-bit processor after Apple included the ARM-based A7 chip in the iPhone 5S.

The A7 is the first 64-bit chip to be included in a smartphone, but Shin Jong-Kyun, head of Samsung’s mobile business, told chief executives of the company’s key affiliates the Korean manufacturer wasn’t too far behind.

“Not in the shortest time. But yes, our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing functionality,” Shin is quoted as saying.

He also discussed the company’s Chinese ambitions following the launch of the iPhone 5C. Samsung currently has the largest share of the world’s largest mobile phone market with 19.4 percent, while Apple commands just 4.3 percent.

The cheaper iPhone 5C is widely viewed as an attempt by Apple to expand its share of this lucrative market by leveraging its brand recognition, but Samsung has no intention of letting its crown slip and will step up its efforts in the country too.

It plans to hold a launch event for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in China and believes its better pricing, stronger product line up and local channel partnerships will allow it to maintain and increase its share.

“We have no reason to allow Apple to steal market share from us,” Samsung told The Korea Times.

Samsung has good reason to be confident despite plans by Apple to launch the iPhone 5C on the same day in China as the US. Early reports suggest many people in the country feel the device is still too expensive, but some analysts believe the iPhone 5C will benefit from continued demand for smartphones in China.
