Meebo Apps To Shut Down Ahead Of Google+ Integration

Only Meebo Bar will survive as services closed next month

Social platform Meebo  is shutting down the majority of its applications – just one week after announcing  it is to be acquired by Google.

The only survivor of the cull is the Meebo bar – a chat widget that allows users of a particular site to chat. Meebo has promised the bar will continue to be available to site publishers ahead of “continued improvements and new features in the weeks and months ahead.”

The rest of Meebo’s services will cease to exist from 11 July and instructions on how to delete accounts or download information have been supplied.

Google+ Integration

Users of meebo services such as Meebo Messenger and Sharing on Meebo will be able to download their sharing and chat history before the deadline, while all embedded Meebo Me widgets will no longer function, but site owners will still need to remove the code from any webpages.

All of Meebo’s mobile apps, including iPhone, Android and BlackBerry, will cease to work, but again chat logs can be downloaded until 11 July. Any user wishing to delete their account immediately can do so by visiting Meebo.

Meebo was founded in 2005 as a cross-platform instant messaging service and introduced the Meebo bar, which enabled people on the same site to chat to each other.

Google acquired Meebo last week, along with QuickOffice, and announced that it intended to integrate Meebo into its Google+ social network in an effort to combat rival Facebook

“Together with Google, we’re super jazzed to roll up our sleeves and get cracking on even bigger and better ways to help users and website owners alike,” said Meebo when announcing the takeover. ““We’ve had a blast building Meebo so far and we’re really excited to start the next leg of our journey.”

Google+ has struggled since its launch last year, but recently announced that it had 170 million users, although this figure has been disputed by critics who believe it is inflated.
