Google Launches US East Coast Cloud Region

A new Google Cloud region will lower latency and improve disaster recovery options for Google Cloud customers on the east coast of the United States.

Google has opened its new us-east1 region in South Carolina, based out of its Dalles data centre.

“Today, we’re bringing Google Cloud Platform closer to even more people and businesses, the firm said.

“We’re opening our new us-east1 region in South Carolina for Google Compute Engine, Google Cloud Storage, and Cloud SQL.  Google App Engine will be coming soon, we’ll have more on this shortly!”

Google said that the new regions satisfies those customers on the US east coast that were waiting on a presence.

The company this week also announced that four Cloud Storage regional buckets are now in general availability, meaning customers can put storage buckets closer to their Compute Engine instances.

The new storage buckets are located in Taiwan (asia-east1), Belgium (Europe-west1), South Carolina (us-east1), and Iowa (us-central1).

In August, four successive lightning strikes that affected a data centre in Belgium were the cause of the four-day cloud outage.

From Thursday August 13 to Monday August 17, errors on Google’s Compute Engine persistent disks in its Belgium data centre caused a blackout for a small portion of customers in Europe.

The search giant has now said that lightning strikes, which hit a local power grid, caused a loss of power to some of its storage systems, resulting in the persistent disk errors.
