EE Names Rhyl As 200th 4G Location As LTE Arrives In 13 More Towns

EE 4G service has gone live in another thirteen towns, with the North Wales seaside resort of Rhyl given the honour of being named the 200th settlement in the UK to be added to the operator’s LTE network.

Armadale, Bishop Auckland, Brighouse, Cumbernauld, Hamilton Kirkintilloch, Larne, Newry, Peterlee, Staines, Stockton-on-Tees, and Washington are the other towns to be added, bringing EE’s 4G coverage to 72 percent of the UK population.

“Today we switch on our 200th 4G town just 18 months after pioneering the service in the UK,” said EE CEO Olaf Swantee, adding that a town or city must have 80 percent LTE coverage before it is considered fully connected.

EE 4G coverage

“We now have over 2 million customers using superfast 4G. That’s the fastest roll-out and uptake of any technology in Britain, and means that the UK’s mobile digital infrastructure is now ahead of many other nations.”

EE has rapidly expanded coverage since it launched 4G in November 2012, with its service also covering major airports and transport routes and commercial deals ensuring sports fans at Wembley and music lovers at Glastonbury will also be able to receive LTE.

Thanks to the head start, EE has more 4G customers and coverage than its rivals and was recently named best network by independent research firm RootMetrics, which measured the performance of all four major operators in what it says is the most comprehensive study of mobile network coverage ever undertaken in this country.

In the face of increasing competition, EE has sought to maintain its lead by offering cheaper contracts, shared data plans and pay as you go tariffs, alongside its own-brand EE Kestrel smartphone.
