Amazon To Create 2,000 New UK Jobs

Amazon is set to create more than 2,000 jobs in the UK over the next two years at three new fulfilment centres where online shopping orders are dispatched.

Opportunities at the new centres will include roles in HR, IT, facilities management, Learning and Development as well as in a number of operational management areas.

The online retailer has just created 600 new permanent jobs at its new 450-square foot fulfilment centre in Hemel Hempstead and will also offer 3,000 temporary positions at its existing centres over the Christmas period.

Amazon currently operates facilities in Marston Gate, Doncaster, Peterborough, Rugely, Dunfermiline, Gourock and Swansea Bay.

Amazon Jobs

“We have created thousands of jobs in the UK over the last few years and are delighted to announce that we plan to create thousands more in the next 24 months,” said Christopher North, managing director of Amazon.co.uk. “Our recruitment team has been exceptionally busy recently hiring hundreds of employees at the Hemel Hempstead fulfillment centre and they will certainly be busy over the next couple of years as we continue to expand to provide customers with the best possible experience. We look forward to welcoming thousands of new recruits to the Amazon team.”

In July Amazon announced plans to set up a digital media development centre in London which will employ hundreds of people building interactive web services for smartphones, tablets and PCs.

The government has welcomed the news, despite reports that Amazon is currently the subject of an investigation by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) following revelations that it doesn’t pay any corporation tax on the £3.3 billion worth of sales it generated in the UK last year – since it has been based in Luxembourg since 2006.

“I am delighted that Amazon will create thousands of new jobs. This is great news, not only for those individuals who will find work, but for the UK economy,” said Prime Minister David Cameron. “This shows that the UK has the infrastructure and talent to continue to attract major investments from leading companies such as Amazon.”

Amazon yesterday announced a new backlit version of its Kindle e-reader as well as a new seven-inch version of its Kindle Fire tablet and the Kindle Fire HD, which will be released in the UK for the first time later this year.
