Data centre managers need to adapt to a major shift form performance to efficiency, according to a guide published by eWEEK Europe today.

Until recently, IT professionals were required to produce results, and were rarely measured on their efficiency. Now, according to the eWEEK How-To Guide, How to increase Data Centre Management Efficiency, that is changing.

And as data centre managers need to work harder on efficiency, the means to achieve it are not always clear. Vendors – and some users – focus on the cost of hardware and software (and its effect on the industry) while the real costs of data centres are mostly in the management overheads, and the only way to reduce these is through increased efficiency.

Some companies are expected to create “Energy Tsars”, to meet new demands for carbon reporting, but data centres themselves will have to respond with better instrumentation and reporting.

“An efficient IT infrastructure managegement solution should include consolidated out-of-band management solution with one single console and one user interface that has advanced features such as logging and audit, and allows access to all relevant IT infrastructure in data centres and branch offices – includin power control,” said Wolfgang Goretzki, product marketing manager EMEA for Avocent, sponsor of the guide. “Only then can IT be managed efficiently.”
