HPE Sells OpenStack And CloudFoundry Assets To SUSE

HPE has sold its OpenStack Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and CloudFoundry Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) assets to German open source software firm SUSE.

SUSE will integrate the assets into its OpenStack Cloud and CloudFoundry PaaS products and will take a seat on the board of CloundFoundry of which it is now a platinum member.

As part of the deal, HPE has named SUSE as its preferred open source partner for Linux, OpenStack and CloudFoundry.

Open Source infrastructure

No financial details have been disclosed, but SUSE said the deal underlines its commitment to open source software defined infrastructure technologies.

“Once again, this strategy sends a strong message to the market and the worldwide open source community that SUSE is a company on the move,” declared Nils Brauckmann, SUSE CEO.

In September HPE sold its ‘non-core’ software assets and merged them with UK firm Micro Focus – parent company of SUSE – for £6.6 billion. HPE CEO Meg Whitman said this would allow it to direct efforts on building out software defined and cloud services.

“We are evolving our investment strategy to focus on developing the next generation of hybrid cloud solutions, which combines HPE technology with a broad ecosystem of open source and partner technologies that support traditional and cloud native applications, explained Ric Lewis, general manager of HPE’s software-defined and cloud group.

“Customers tell us they need simple hybrid offerings. By partnering with SUSE, HPE will continue to provide high quality OpenStack and Cloud Foundry PaaS solutions that are simple to deploy into customer’s multi-cloud environments.”
