TechWeek Readers More Excited About WP8 Than iPhone 5

As we edge ever closer to the anticipated launch of the iPhone 5, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive, suggesting that Apple’s next smartphone will have a quad-core processor, a larger screen, Near Field Communication technology and even support for 4G networks.

The fact that the new phone will reportedly have a different connector has also attracted column inches, such is the interest in the device.

It is expected that the iPhone 5 will debut next month, and it has been reported that the level of excitement is depressing sales of all smartphones as everyone holds their breath. We thought it was a perfect time to ask TechWeekEurope readers whether they were actually excited about its arrival and it turns out that the majority of you aren’t.

iPhone 5 Imminent

Only 20.7 percent of you said that you couldn’t wait to upgrade to the latest piece of Cupertino-built technology, however not all Apple fans are convinced, with 4.6 percent saying that they preferred their existing iPhone 4 or 4S.

One third of respondents said that they would not be upgrading to the new iPhone because they preferred Android, although given that a US court found that several Samsung smartphones infringed Apple’s design and software patents, one could surmise you might be enjoying some iPhone features already.

Perhaps surprisingly, one quarter said that they were going to give the iPhone 5 a miss because they wanted a smartphone running Windows Phone 8, also due to launch any day now while 2.8 percent are waiting for FireFox OS and another 2.4 percent for BlackBerry OS 10, something that should be music to Microsoft and Nokia’s ears.

In our latest poll, we want to know what you think of the updated EU WEEE Directive’s targets for reclaiming electronic waste. Let us know if they are a load of e-rubbish, or a breath of clean fresh air, by voting on the right hand side of your screen.
