Trustwave Expands Product Portfolio With M86 Security Takeover

Security solutions provider Trustwave has acquired M86 security in a move that sees it enter the web security market.

Trustwave gains M86’s portfolio of web and security products and will incorporate its security labs into its own security team.

Expanding portfolio

The company says that M86’s products will allow it to expand its security offering giving it a share in a web security market which is expected to grow from $1.7 billion (£1.1bn) in 2010 to $3 billion (£1.9bn) by 2015. The takeover is expected to be finalised in the next few weeks, although no financial details have been disclosed.

“By acquiring M86 Security, Trustwave is adding Web security to one of the industry’s most comprehensive security product portfolios – including our compliance, application, network and data security solutions,” commented Robert J. McCullen, chairman, CEO and president of Trustwave. “Customers and partners will benefit from our simplified approach to delivering advanced anti-malware technology through the cloud and our managed services.”

As part of the deal, Trustwave will acquire M86’s Security Gateway, WebMarshall, Web Filtering and Reporting Suite products as well as email security programme MailMarshal. M86 Security Labs, which provides updates to these products, will be incorporated into SpiderLabs, Trustwave’s own security team which focuses on penetration testing, incident response, application security and security research.

Close integration

Trustwave also gains M86’s 25,000-strong customer base and 26 million users in over 96 countries, something which the company says will help it bolster its international presence, especially in the EMEA region. It says that M86’s channel and service providers will complement Trustwave’s existing partner network and that it plans to adopt and expand M86’s Partner Focus programme.

M86 Security’s web security offering was strengthened by its own acquisition of Finjan in 2009 and in 2010 it announced an extension to its partnership with Kaspersky Labs to strengthen its web and email systems. Earlier this month, Trustwave admitted to using a digital certificate that was used to monitor employee’s encrypted communications, causing Mozilla to revoke the company’s status as a trusted root.
