LG Display Announces World’s First Quad HD LCD Screen

LG Display says it has developed the world’s first ‘Quad HD’ LCD display, which offers the highest resolution and pixels per inch (ppi) of any smartphone screen to date and will help deal with the growing trend towards larger smartphone displays.

The 5.5-inch panel is capable of a 2560 x 1440 resolution, four times more pixels than existing HD displays, and has 538 ppi. LG says this will mean the screen can reproduce more delicate colours and improve contrast and vividness over existing displays.

Additionally, it promises more lifelike and crisp images, blu-ray quality video and the ability to offer a full view of PC version web pages without image distortion. Current full HD screens can only show three quarters of the page it is claimed.

The Quad HD LCD display is also the thinnest display ever created at just 1.21mm, with a 1.2mm bezel.

“LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world’s first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology,” said Byeong-koo Kim, vice president and head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group. “With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.”

LG Display provides screens for a number of smartphone manufacturers, including Apple, for which it supplied displays for the iPhone 5. LG’s own smartphones have enjoyed success in recent times, fuelled mainly by the popularity of the Google-branded LG Nexus 4, while it also recently showed off the Android-powered LG G2 handset.
