French development company Jolicloud is to launch Jolibook, a cloud-based netbook for hard-up young geeks,  in the UK.

The Jolibook is a standard small form-factor laptop, with pre-installed web apps including Gmail, Facebook, Skype and Spotify. Web services are launched directly from the desktop, avoiding browser clutter and login processes, and 750 other apps are avaiable to be downloaded and updated with a single click..

The Biggest Little Things

The Jolibook weighs 1.35kg, fits easily in a handbag, and boots up in seconds and offers hundreds of apps. The Jolibook is “the biggest little thing in computers,” says Jolicloud.

The device has a 1.5GHz dual-core Intel Atom processor and a 250GB hard driv, a 10.1inch screen and a removable battery that can last for seven hours.

Manufactured by Vye Computers, the device runs the Jolicloud 1.1 operating system, and uses a user interface built in HTML5 instead of Flash.

The French netbook can be pre-ordered on Amazon for £279.99. However, it may take three months before the productis delivered.

Jolicloud’s cofounder and chief executive Tariq Krim is confident the price will attract budget-conscious users who are the “prisoners” of over-priced gadgets.

He said the Jolibook is designed for  “people that don’t know about computing, the people who don’t know that their computer could be easily fixed and that they can have free software instead of paying for everything”.
