Cisco Targets Cloud Rivals With Intercloud Alliance Expansion

Intercloud project scoops up partners to dish out Cisco cloud en masse

One year after Cisco’s unveiling of its $1 billion Intercloud project, the firm has announced it is partnering with 35 independent software vendors that will each spew out Cisco’s cloud around the world.

The company is effectively enlisting the help of a plethora of smaller cloud providers so it can take on bigger rivals such as Amazon Web Services.

But to make using Cisco’s cloud services more appetising, the firm also announced at this year’s Cisco Live a multitude of new products for its Intercloud project, including a hybrid cloud focused managing suite called Cisco Intercloud Fabric, and the Intercloud Marketplace—a partner-centric global storefront for Intercloud-based applications and cloud services from Cisco and partners.

ciscoIntercloud Fabric exists to simplify hybrid cloud, said the firm. Ten Intercloud partners including Cirrity, Datalink, Sungard Availability Services and Virtustream announced new hybrid cloud services built on Cisco Intercloud Fabric.

The San Jose company, which is currently holding its annual conference in San Diego, also announced new customers for Intercloud Fabric including the Salvation Army and KPIT Technolgies.

Cisco said that the marketplace is a global storefront for Intercloud applications and services that will open in Autumn on this year.
