Tesco Confirms October 3 Launch For Hudl 2

Tesco has revealed plans to launch the second generation of its budget Android Hudl tablet next month, just in time for the Christmas market.

The supermarket giant, which hit the headlines this week for alleged financial misrepresentation, sent out invitations to a media event on October 3 including the hashtag #letshudl.

The company’s existing Hudl web page now also has a new section where customers can register for “a sneak peak” at new information and updates on the Hudl 2, with a colour-changing banner leading some to suggest that the new device will be available in several different designs, much like Apple’s 5C smartphone.

Bigger and better?

The news confirms speculation earlier this month that Tesco would be scrapping plans to develop a Hudl smartphone to focus attention on the Hudl 2, having decided it would not be able to compete in what is already a very crowded mobile marketplace.

Costing just £119 at launch, Tesco’s original Hudl tablet (pictured left) was a surprise hit last Christmas, with the company revealing it had succeeded expectations to sell 400,000 units in the first three months of being on sale, and even selling out on two occasions.

The second iteration of the device will hopefully see it receive most advanced specifications which could help it compete with the likes of Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX or Samsung’s latest Galaxy tablets.

The original Hudl, which is now available for just £99, features a 7-inch screen, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, and runs Android Jelly Bean 4.2. It offers up to nine hours battery life and was available in four colours.
