MWC 2014 Video: What is ETSI?

Ultan Mulligan from the European standards body talks about 4G, 5G and beyond

This week, around 85,000 people descended on Fira Gran Via exhibition centre in Barcelona to take part in Mobile World Congress (MWC) – the world’s largest exhibition for the mobile industry.

Naturally, representatives of Europe’s telecoms standards body, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) were in attendance. But what influence does the Institute have on the global mobile market?

ETSI-logoOur colleagues from Silicon.fr have talked to Ultan Mulligan, director of Communications, Memberships and Partnerships at ETSI, to find out more about the process of setting standards and the future of LTE.

ETSI is the organisation which, among other things, is responsible for the development of Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs). In 2012, it made the decision to adopt Apple’s nano-SIM proposal as the worldwide standard. As a result, most flagship devices at this year’s MWC required a nano-SIM to function.
