CES 2016 – Dell Unleashes Super-Thin Latitude Laptops

Dell is the latest PC manufacturer to show off “premium” slimline business laptops at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Three new PCs, the Latitude 13 7000 ultrabook and Latitude 12 7000, and Latitude 11 5000 2-in-1 devices, promise enhanced design, more powerful hardware and a light and slim build for easy portability.

On the go

First off is the Latitude 13 7000 Series (pictured left), which Dell says is the world’s smallest 13-inch business-class ultrabook.

Built using the same carbon fibre material used for spacecraft, the Latitude 13’s screen comes with an ultra-thin bezel, making it perfect for presentations as well as viewing video content.

The Latitude 13 also comes with USB Type-C connectivity, extended battery life, and the option of a range of advanced security features, including a smartcard reader, fingerprint reader, RFID reader, and security and encryption software.

There’s no news yet on price, but the Latitude 13 7000 will be available from early March 2016 from Dell’s website.

Slimline

Next, is the Dell Latitude 12 7000 Series, (see main image) a 12.5 inch PC that Dell says offers both the performance and design of a laptop coupled with the portability of a tablet. As opposed to other such devices on the market, the Latitude 12 uses magnets to transition between the two modes, and is available with a choice of two keyboard options

The device seems well set to deal with the rigours of everyday use, with a slim 8mm screen, magnesium and Gorilla Glass unibody build, coupled with a 4K UltraSharp UHD touch display.

Lastly, the Dell Latitude 11 5000 Series (pictured right) features a 10.8 inch screen made of hardened glass, coupled with a lightweight magnesium build (weighing in at just 707g) for optimum portability.

As with its bigger brother, the Latitude 11 also offers comprehensive security and manageability capabilities, including ‘comprehensive’ encryption, ‘advance’d authentication, malware prevention, and automated and streamlined system deployment, monitoring and updating.

The Latitude 12 7000 series will be available from early February 2016 starting at £929, with the Latitude 11 5000 series also available from early February 2016 from £569.

“For more than 20 years, Latitude products have been a leading choice among commercial customers worldwide for their unmatched security, manageability, reliability and support features,” said Kirk Schell, vice president and general manager, commercial client solutions, Dell.

“With the new Latitude line, we are delivering commercial devices employees will desire for being thinner, lighter and more capable than many of the most popular consumer products without compromising on the security and manageability requirements of IT.”

  • This what I have been waiting for from Dell. In my opinion, the Lenovo 2-1 laptops have been the leader in thin, light, mobility features. This past black Friday I was hoping for Dell to come out with something new and innovative. It seems Dell has finally stepped up to the plate with theses "premium" ulta-thin 2-1 tablets. Now the only thing that is left is the price point.
