Bird Canada today announced that it will resume its service in Edmonton, having secured a permit to operate. In addition to its popular e-scooters, Bird Canada is also launching its Bird e-bikes Edmonton. The roll-out of these Bird micromobility solutions will begin immediately following the media event taking place today at 10:00 am MDT at 83 Avenue & Gateway Boulevard, in the Southeast Surface Lot.

This is the first year that both e-scooters and e-bikes will be available on the streets of Edmonton as a low-cost, fun, and environmentally friendly way for residents and visitors to get to local restaurants, retail locations, schools, and more. Bird Canada will have 200 e-bikes and 750 e-scooters available throughout the city. Bird Canada’s e-scooters and e-bikes can be used on Edmonton’s network of bike lanes and shared pathways.

“Being selected as a vendor to provide micromobility services in Edmonton this season is a testament to the work our team has done over the years to not only ensure rider safety but to also educate riders on the etiquette of using our vehicles alongside pedestrians and cars, and parking them properly,” said Stewart Lyons, CEO of Bird Canada. “With both e-scooters and e-bikes available, those living in or visiting Edmonton now have the option to choose the micromobility service that works best for each trip. While our e-scooters are great for short trips, our e-bikes provide a fantastic option for traveling longer distances.”

The Bird Canada Ride Pass is Back

Bird Canada is also offering its new and improved Ride Pass, which provides flat free pricing options for riders in Edmonton. The Day Pass provides 90 minutes of riding on either Bird e-scooters or e-bikes within a 24 hour period; the 3-Day Pass provides 270 minutes of riding within a 72-hour period; the Week Pass enables users to ride up to 90 minutes each day over a period of seven days; and the Monthly Pass provides the flexibility to ride for up to 90 minutes each day during a one month period.

Bird e-Bike is Built with Safety and Durability in Mind

The Bird e-Bike is a smart, connected vehicle designed to complement Edmonton’s existing transportation network. Each e-bike is equipped with a high-powered electric motor capable of powering riders up hills with as much as a 20% grade, while its solid frame and step-through design offers riders of all sizes a sturdy yet maneuverable vehicle for increased safety. Additionally, the shared Bird e-Bike has a front basket for storage, large pneumatic tires for a smooth ride, and the latest in technology features such as self-automating onboard diagnostics, geospeed technology, and multi-mode geolocation to ensure compliant operations in Edmonton. Helmets are mandatory for riders of all ages when riding an e-bike in Edmonton.

Shared e-bikes and e-scooters are one of the many ways the City of Edmonton is working to support Edmontonians and all the ways they move. For example, earlier this year, Summer Streets were launched for the season by converting portions of road on Victoria Park Hill Road, Saskatchewan Drive (109 Street to west of 104 Street), and 104 Street (Saskatchewan Drive to 78 Avenue) to lanes where active modes, including bicycles, e-scooters, and e-bikes, can been enjoyed all summer.

How to Use Bird Canada Electric Vehicles

  • To use Bird e-scooters and e-bikes, riders must download the Bird smartphone app.
  • Through the app, riders can locate the most conveniently located vehicles and ride directly to their desired destination.
  • New riders are provided an in-app tutorial on how to properly use Bird vehicles and how to park them in compliance with local rules.
  • Riders can start a trip by scanning the QR code located on the e-scooter.
  • Riders can request a free helmet be sent to them through the app.
  • Riders are requested to park Bird e-scooters in the furniture zone of the sidewalk, out of the public right of way, in line with benches, trees, and bike racks without blocking pedestrian travel.

Bird Canada Safety Events

Throughout the season, Bird Canada will be hosting a series of Safety Events along Summer Streets to help educate new riders and ensure everyone is following the rules of the road. During these events – which are hosted in partnership with local organizations, businesses, and health and safety experts – riders can learn about the fundamentals of safe road use for non-car users, how to responsibly and properly ride and park Bird Canada vehicles, micromobility vehicle basics, tutorials of local rules of the road, and parking best practices. New riders will also receive a free helmet. Details on upcoming Safety Events will be shared on Bird Canada’s social media channels.
