Arkansas Virtual Academy (ARVA), an online public school serving K-12
students throughout the state, will celebrate the Class of 2019 at an
in-person commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11th. The
ceremony will take place at the Connor Performing Arts Center at Pulaski
Academy in Little Rock.

Many assume that attending an online public school like ARVA means that
students miss out on “real” high school experiences, but this in-person
graduation proves quite the opposite.

This year, ARVA will graduate more than 150 students, which is over 20%
more than 2018. About a quarter of students are graduating with honors.
For example, students Andrea DeTour and Kayla Regan-Sage are graduating
at the top of their class. At least one of this year’s graduates is a
recipient of the Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship for outstanding
academic achievement.

Collectively, the Class of 2019 reports it has been offered more than
$500,000 in scholarships and have been accepted to trade schools,
colleges and universities across the country, including: University of
Arkansas, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Arkansas State
University, Pulaski Technical College, University of Central Arkansas,
Salon Professional Academy, and Northwest Arkansas Community College.

“ARVA’s Class of 2019 has shown the determination in their education
that will serve them well in college and beyond,” said ARVA’s Head of
School Amy Johnson. “Like most kids, they have struggled, and they have
succeeded, but it is these life lessons that will set them up for
success as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”

Kayla Regan-Sage will serve as valedictorian. Andrea DeTour will serve
as salutatorian. Both students, as well as Ms. Johnson, will be
available for media interviews.

Students enroll in ARVA for a number of reasons—some are looking to
escape bullying, some may have fallen academically off track, and others
are looking for an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar
classroom setting. ARVA students access a robust online curriculum in
the core subjects of math, science, English language arts, history, art
and music and a host of electives, and attend live virtual classes
taught by state-licensed teachers.
