Samsung Reveals ‘Slimmest Ever’ Galaxy A8 Smartphone

Samsung hopes the launch of its slimmest mobile device ever will help engineer a recovery from its recent struggles.

The all-metal Galaxy A8 measures just 5.9mm across and weighs 151g, but also manages to pack in some impressive specs into its slimeline body as it looks to challenge the mid-range to premium smartphone market.

The device was quietly revealed overnight on Samsung’s Chinese website, and as yet there is no news on a wider global release.

Slimline

Made from aluminium, the Galaxy A8 features a 5.7-inch 1080p OLED display that stretches nearly to edges of the device, with bezels at a minimum. Under the cover, the device is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 615 chip, 2GB RAM and a generous 3,050mAh battery, 16GB or 32GB of storage, and support for 4G LTE networks.

There’s also a 16MP rear and 5MP front camera, and several other neat tools including a fingerprint sensor and hand-wave detection to activate a photo timer, as Samsung looks to help its devices stand out in an increasingly crowded market.

There’s no news on the price of the Galaxy A8 yet, or whether we’ll see it on sale in Western markets, but the company hopes the device can help improve sluggish sales across the world.

Earlier this month it revealed its next set of quarterly results are likely to miss analysts’ expectations amid speculation that the flagship Galaxy S6 didn’t set the market alight as much as it hoped. This is despite Samsung previously saying that it expected the combined sales for the S6 and S6 Edge to set a new company sales record.
