Samsung says that its new supersized Samsung Galaxy Mega ‘phablet’, will offer the best of smartphone and tablet features when it is released in Europe at the beginning of May.
Boasting a whopping 6.3-inch touchscreen, Samsung promises that the larger display will provide an “optimal viewing experience” and split screen multitasking features.
The Korean manufacturer promises that despite the larger size, it is still possible to carry the device in your pocket, and for those unconvinced, a 5.8-inch version of the smartphone will also be available.
“We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Business, Samsung Electronics. “We are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers’ varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning Galaxy series.”
Samsung popularised the ‘phablet’ category of smartphones with the release of the original Samsung Galaxy Note, but even the smaller Samsung Galaxy 5.8 is still larger than the most recent model, the Samsung Galaxy Note II, which measures up at 5.5-inches.
The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is powered by a 1.7 GHz dual core processor, Android 4.2 Jelly Bea and 1.5MB of RAM. It is available in both 8GB and 16GB varieties, which can be expanded by up to 64GB through an external memory slot. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is almost identical except that it has a slightly less powerful 1.4GHz processor.
Both devices feature Samsung connectivity and entertainment features, many of which were outlined during the launch of the company’s latest flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S4 last month. The Galaxy S4 is due to be released in the UK on 26 April, shipping with a 5-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.9 GHz quad-core processor and support for LTE networks.
Samsung has also recently showed off the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona during February, although this is intended to be a tablet device rather than a smartphone.
