Having already improved Yahoo’s share price dramatically, and having acquired in earnest, bringing in the likes of Tumblr and Summly, Mayer has now overseen a significant win over competitors. The company saw over 196 million unique visitors across its web properties in July 2013.

That was ahead of Google on 192 million and Microsoft on 180 million. Facebook saw 142 million.

Yahoo back on top

Yahoo was last number one back in May 2011, according to Marketing Land, which discovered the data did not include Tumblr visits.

That would indicate Yahoo could be even further ahead of the competition than the Comscore figures show. Tumblr saw over 38 million uniques in July.

However, the figures do not include mobile app traffic, where the likes of Google and Facebook are hugely popular.

Meyer continues to make changes across Yahoo. This week saw the recruitment of a new chairman, Silicon Valley veteran Maynard Webb, whilst a slew of researchers with PHD qualifications have been added to the Yahoo Labs team, which heavy cuts under predecessors.
