MWC 2014: Sony Shows Off Xperia Z2, M2 Smartphones And Z2 Tablet

Sony refreshes smartphone and tablet range in Barcelona, with the Xperia Z2, M2 and Z2 tablet – boosting camera apps and adding NFC devices including the Smartband

Sony has revealed the Xperia Z2, its new flagship smartphone, at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, alongside the mid-range Xperia M2 and Xperia Z2 tablet.

The Sony Xperia Z2’s strength appears to be in imaging, with a 20.7 megapixel sensor supported by a range of camera applications, such as slow motion video, filters, augmented reality and Vine integration, as well as the ability to take videos in 4K quality. Vodafone has already promised that the phone will be available soon in the UK with a promise o9f “an exciting deal” for those who pre-order.

It’s also waterproof and dustproof to IP55 and IP58 standards – something which has become the Xperia series’ trademark – and up to 98 percent of background noise can be cancelled out with a compatible headset.

Under the bonnet is a 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 precessor, 3GB of RAM and longer battery life thanks to Sony’s Stamina technology. It’s also compatible with 154 Near Field Communication (NFC) products and can be paired with the Sony SmartBand SWR10, which is also making its debut at MWC.

“With Xperia Z2 we have taken our premium Z series to the next level, delivering unique experiences that only Sony can offer,” says Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications. “We have redefined the smartphone once again through our camera. Xperia Z2 offers an innovative experience that captures memories in stunning detail through 4K video shooting, or offers new ways to use the camera with our unique Xperia camera apps.”

The Sony Xperia M2 boasts a 4.8-inch display, which Sony says is the largest qHD screen of any smartphone in its class, while it also claims to be world’s slimmest 4G smartphone.

The Xperia M2 is powered by a 1.2GHz dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, while it has a less powerful eight megapixel camera. It will be available in a dual SIM variant and has the same battery saving technology and NFC support as the Xperia Z2.

Both devices will ship with the full complement of Sony applications, including Walkman and Playstation, when they are released in April alongside the Xperia Z2 tablet.

The Xperia Z2 tablet’s claim to fame is that it is the world’s slimmest and lightweight tablet and that it has the fastest processor of any slate, with the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor powering it. The Wi-Fi model weights 426g and the cellular version 439g

It has a 10.1-inch Full HD Triluminos display, front surround sound technology, noise cancelling and an 8.1 megapixel camera. It claims to have a longer lasting battery and can charge up to 75 percent quicker than devices that don’t have its quick charge feature.

Last year, Sony revealed the Xperia Z and Xperia Z tablet at MWC, telling TechWeekEurope it hoped to become the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer in 2013.
