IFA: Rugged Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Targets Difficult Business Environments

Samsung has revealed the Galaxy Tab Active, its first ruggedized business tablet intended for use outdoors and by mobile workers in challenging work environments such as construction, retail, logistics and transportation.

The Korean manufacturer says the 8-inch Galaxy Tab Active will combine its durable exterior with many of the security and productivity features of its other mobile devices, such as Samsung Knox mobile device management (MDM) for administrators.

The tablet has a protective cover that can withstand a drop of up to 1.2 metres, while it also has IP67 dust and water certification, providing the ability to operate in wet and dry environments and hot and cold temperatures.

A 3.1 megapixel camera is intended for barcode scanning, and stylus compatibility means the tablet can be used by people who need to wear gloves. Samsung promises the battery will last for between eight and ten hours, and can be replaced.

The Galaxy Tab Active is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage which can be expanded by up to 64GB through a MicroSD card slot. The tablet comes in ‘Titanium green’ and in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and LTE varieties.

It will also be included in a number of vertical packages for different industries, along with virtual display and printing products, as Samsung steps up its enterprise mobility ambitions in an effort to offset any potential decline in the consumer smartphone market.

The company has released a number of other new devices in the past few months, including the Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphones, as well as its latest flagship consumer tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S.
