Mozilla Releases 64-Bit Firefox 43 For Windows

Mozilla has released a 64-bit version of Firefox for Windows the first time, with editions of Firefox 43 now available for all supported platforms.

Other enhancements include better private browsing with an extended choice of what trackers can be blocked, improved API support for M4V video playback, along with a host of security fixes.

Firefox 42, released last month, introduced private browsing, called ‘tracking Protection’, providing users with control over what data is sent to third parties.

The Mozilla Foundation says it is delighted to finally launch a 64-bit version for Microsoft’s operating system but has warned that certain sites and plug-ins might not work the same as they did with the 32-bit version

“Today we are releasing Firefox 64-bit for Windows to offer gains in performance for users with 64-bit systems,” said Mozilla in a blog post. “We’re pleased to offer it to users of Windows 7 and above looking for added performance for applications and games.

“Firefox 64-bit for Windows, by design, has limited support for plugins and users will notice that certain sites requiring plugins that worked in previous 32-bit versions of Firefox might not work in this 64-bit version. As we’ve shared previously, Mozilla intends to remove support for most NPAPI plugins in Firefox by the end of 2016.”

Mozilla recently announced it was halting the development of Firefox OS, its open web-based operating system, for smartphones. The platform is not dead however, with the non-profit organisation switching its focus to areas like the Internet of Things (IoT) and connected TVs.
