13in and 14in ultrabooks weigh in at under 1kg as LG looks to go lightweight

LG has launched two new ultra-light laptops that each weigh less than a bag of sugar.

Available with either a 13in or 14in screen, the LG Gram series of ultrabooks both weigh in at 980g – making them lighter than Apple’s Macbook Air devices.

The devices will go on sale in the US from today via the Amazon and Microsoft Stores, marking LG’s most portable devices yet – although they will set you back a pretty price.

The 14in version is available with either the same Core i5 processor and 128GB of storage, costing $999 (£657), or a super-powered 2.4Ghz Core i7 processor and 256GB of storage respectively, costing $1,399 (£921).

As for the build, both devices feature a 1920×1080 IPS display with a tiny 7.2mm bezel, and are just 0.5in or 12.5mm thick. Also included is a micro USB port and two USB 3.0 slots, along with HDMI and SDXC connectivity, all powered by a 35 Wh battery that should provide up to 7.5 hours battery life.

“LG has a long history of developing innovative consumer electronics products and has applied that expertise, along with its laptop success in other markets, to the LG gram series in the US,” said David VanderWaal, vice president of marketing, LG Electronics USA.

“We recognise this is an extremely competitive category, and are confident consumers will respond well to this product that combines powerful performance with lightweight design.”
