Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 Available At Windows 8 Launch

New tablet will debut in October with enterprise security and management options

Lenovo has unveiled what it claims is the first tablet to be specifically designed for Windows 8, the ThinkPad Tablet 2.

The new tablet is the result of a joint effort between Lenovo, Microsoft and Intel and will be available when Windows 8 debuts this October. The Chinese manufacturer is touting the benefits to enterprises and claims that it will help manage the increasing overlap between personal and work life.

Microsoft has promised that Windows 8 will work equally well on both desktops and tablets. It is the first version of the operating system to support ARM processors, which are used in many mobile devices today.

The ThinkPad 2 is based on the upcoming Intel Atom mobile platform and runs Windows 8 Pro, rather than Windows RT, which is designed for ARM processors. Microsoft’s own Surface tablet will be available in two flavours, running both versions.  It will be unleashed on the tablet market with the launch of Windows 8.

However, by using the ThinkPad’s Intel x86 architecture, IT managers will be able to use existing management tools, control application deployment and block users from installing certain apps. Security is also enhanced through an optional fingerprint reader and encrypted internal and external storage that meets the highest level of security requirements.

In addition, the Lenovo tablet boasts USB and HDMI ports, ensuring that it is compatible with existing printers and monitors, as well as keyboards and docks if users desire a more desktop-like experience. It will also support 3G networks for mobile broadband, as well as 4G in countries where it is available.

ThinkPad Tablet 2 measures in at 9.88mm thin, weights in at less than 600 grams and boasts an HD display and front and rear facing cameras for video conferencing.

“Customers want a versatile device that fits their lifestyle and the many ways they use technology,” said Dilip Bhatia, vice president and general manager, ThinkPad Business Unit. “Our new ThinkPad Tablet 2 marries incredible hardware and software to give consumers a great device for office, home or travel while also offering companies and IT managers the oversight they need to help secure and manage their company’s networks and data.”
