IBM Snaps Up Vivisimo To Bolster Big Data Analytics

Acquisition will bring 140 new customers to IBM, including Airbus, Procter & Gamble and the US Navy

IBM has strengthened its big data analytics offering by acquiring Vivisimo, the discovery and navigation software provider.

The  purchase comes just over a week after it bought Varicent, an analytics software provider for compensation and sales performance management solutions. Financial details for both acquisitions have not been disclosed.

Enhancing big data analytics

Vivisimo, whose clients include the US Air Force, US Navy, Procter & Gamble, Airbus and the Defence Intelligence Agency, claims to excell in the automated capture and delivery of mass data, presenting it in a single view across the enterprise.

IBM says that the acquisition and integration of the Pennsylvania-based company will develop it big data analytics initiatives with “advanced federated capabilities” to access, analyse and navigate structured and unstructured data.

“Navigating big data to uncover the right information is a key challenge for all industries,” said Arvind Krishna, general manager of information management at IBM Software. “The winners in the era of big data will be those who unlock their information assets to drive innovation, make real-time decisions, and gain actionable insights to be more competitive.”

“Businesses need a faster and more accurate way to discover and navigate big data for analysis,” said Vivisimo’s CEO John Keale. “As part of IBM, we can bring clients the quickest and most accurate access to information necessary to drive growth initiatives that increase customer satisfaction, streamline processes, and boost sales.”

When IBM completes its acquisition of Vivisimo, the latter company’s 120 employees will join IBM’s Software Group, while its technology will be incorporated into the big data platform.
