Hyperoptic is rolling out gigabit (1Gbps) fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks in Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, promising residents and businesses will soon be able to enjoy the “UK’s fastest broadband speeds.”
The company has already installed similar networks in Bristol, Cardiff, Reading and London and claims the use of FTTP technology will end the “uncertainty” of speeds of superfast connections delivered over fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) – the technology used by the majority of existing commercial fibre roll-outs.
Hyperoptic’s network in London has expanded to 35,000 homes, spanning 150 major property developments in the capital – including the former London Olympic athletes’ village in Stratford- and hopes to reach half a million homes by 2018. Installation in the new gigabit cities will be based on demand, with Hyperoptic connecting buildings once there is enough interest from residents.
CityFibre has installed gigabit networks in Bournemouth, Peterborough and York, the latter of which is forming part of the planned Sky and TalkTalk fibre network in the city. Much of BT’s commercial rollout of fibre has focused on FTTC, but the firm is also delivering FTTP services to businesses and apartment buildings.
The 1Gbps speeds offered by FTTP services are 55 times faster than the average UK connection speed of 17.8Mbps, according to Ofcom.
