HP To Charge For ProLiant Server Updates And Service Packs From 19 February

HP ProLiant Server users will need a warranty or care pack to continue receiving firmware updates and service packs

From 19 February, HP will only make firmware updates and service packs for HP ProLiant servers available to those who have a valid warranty, care pack service or support agreement.

Previously the updates could be downloaded by anyone, but HP is now changing this policy because it believes it should be rewarded for the development of its intellectual property, similar to the rest of the industry.

HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8“This decision reinforces our goal to provide access to the latest HP firmware, which is valuable intellectual property, sfor our customers who have chosen to maximize and protect their IT investments,” explains Mary McCoy vice president, HP Servers, in a blog post. “We know this is a change from how we’ve done business in the past; however, this aligns with industry best practices and is the right decision for our customers and partners.”

McCoy says that HP is not forcing customers to spend any more money, only adding value to its services.

“Our customers under warranty or support coverage will not need to pay for firmware access, and we are in no way trying to force customers into purchasing extended coverage,” she adds. “That is, and always will be, a customer’s choice.

“Our intention is to offer differentiated and long-term value in the products and services we provide.”

Last week, it was reported that two senior executives, Dave Donatelli, and Todd Bradley, are set to leave the company as part of CEO Meg Whitman’s management shake-up.
