Updated Gmail iOS App Released For iPhone And iPad

Google has released a new version of its Gmail iOS application, introducing a number of improvements to its free email service.

Included in version 2.0 of the Gmail app is long-awaited support for multiple Google accounts along with a raft of productivity features and cosmetic changes.

Users are now able to read and send emails from up to five Google accounts and can switch between them within two taps of the screen. Also added is the ability to respond to Google Calendar invites and +1 or comment on Google+ posts from within the application.

The new Gmail application, which has been in development for six months, also now includes auto-complete predictions, allowing for the quicker composition of emails and the removal of embarrassing typos.

The look of the app is more in line with the web application and includes profile pictures, new animations and infinite scrolling in the message lists. TechWeekEurope tested the new application on both iPad and iPhone and it feels more responsive, while the new, lighter look and fluid animations are pleasing on the eye. Switching between accounts is as easy as Google suggests, and is a much-welcome feature.

Google released the first native Gmail iOS app last year, but was forced to withdraw it soon after launch, following a flood of complaints relating to a bug that caused it to crash when it was opened. The app was soon fixed and re-released onto the App Store.

Google recently launched new YouTube and Google Drive applications for iOS despite its relationship with Apple cooling somewhat. Apple replaced Google Maps as the default mapping provider on iOS with the release of iOS6, but there are reports that the search giant is working on a new Google Maps application for the platform.
