EMC Launches Data Protection-As-A-Service

The company adopts all of its data protection products for the software-defined data centre

American IT juggernaut EMC has launched a major refresh of its data protection products, with new versions of VPLEX, RecoverPoint and Data Domain Operating System.

It also introduced a number of enhancements across its Data Protection Suite, along with a brand new Virtual Edition of VPLEX storage technology which offers both continuous availability and data mobility in 100 percent software-based deployment.

EMC says that the new virtualisation-aware features will help enable smooth transition to software-defined data centres.

“Today, we are announcing products and new integrations that enable customers to deliver a complete spectrum of data protection and availability capabilities as a holistic, consumable service,”  said Guy Churchward, president of Data Protection and Availability division at EMC. “Data protection-as-a-service is a key tenant for establishing effective protection for software-defined data centres—a ‘bedrock’ that needs to be in place for organizations to confidently transition to 3rd platform software infrastructures.”

All of the new data protection products will be generally available in the second quarter of 2014.

EMC has updated several components of the Data Protection Suite – it has added new security features and Linux support for Mozy cloud backup, full integration between Avamar and Data Domain products, and snapshot management for Isilon, VNX and NetApp storage arrays.

The company has also improved Data Protection Suite’s integration with VMware vCloud Suite and Microsoft System Centre Virtual Machine Manager.

Meanwhile, the new version of Data Domain Operating System now features something called ‘DD Boost’- a technology which enables faster, more efficient backup and can be used with Oracle products, the SAP HANA platform, IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server.

There’s also a new multi-tenancy feature for cloud deployments that allows Data Domain Operating System to deliver secure isolation for large enterprises and service providers.

Finally, EMC has combined the continuous availability of VPLEX with remote replication and continuous data protection offered by RecoverPoint to create MetroPoint topology – a unique three-site business continuity capability that delivers comprehensive operational and disaster recovery over any distance.

“Complexity around data protection in the enterprise is increasing, especially in light of the advancements for private, public and hybrid cloud implementation patterns,” commented Swamy Kocherlakota, global head of Infrastructure Architecture and Engineering at BNY Mellon.

“Successfully architecting and delivering an effective enterprise data protection infrastructure requires an end-to-end view of the enabling underlying infrastructure components with out-of-the-box integration, automation where possible. EMC is uniquely positioned to deliver the vision to the needs of large enterprises like BNY Mellon.”
