BT Launches Virtual Data Centre Private

BT is added another option to its Virtual Data Centre (VDC) service after the UK carrier extended it with the VDC Private option.

The VDC Private is a data centre infrastructure service that essentially allows for customers to build their own dedicated private clouds, but at a lower total cost of ownership than using their own resources.

Customers already have the ability to scale up and scale down the service as their requirements change, but the VDC Private option gives them the ability to use their own dedicated hardware if they wish, perhaps because of security or regulatory concerns.

Data Centre For Hire

VDC Private is designed to work BT’s VDC On Demand service, which has been available in the UK since June 2009. It can be provided within the customer’s own data centre or hosted on one of BT’s network-based data centres.

“What we offer historically is a virtual data centre on demand which is enterprise class,” said Rob Jones, senior marketing manager for BT’s global services market team. “This includes a self service portal for customers and allows for customers to cope with unpredictable demand and quickly reduce or expand capacity.”

VDC Private delivers pre-provisioned hosted data centre infrastructure so that customers can create, deploy, monitor and manage their own service on demand through a secure self-service portal.

VDC Extension

“Today’s announcement is an extension of this,” he said. “VDC Private allows for infrastructure to be absolutely dedicated to a customer. We can offer them the ability to do this in a managed service environment or by themselves.”

According to Jones the reasons customers may opt for this can be because of security concerns or the need for a static application requirement. Jones also said that most businesses typically have a blend of both physical and virtual infrastructures, but the BT option provides customers with both storage, server, and network capacity, and can typically save customers 40 percent of their TCO.

“This is another clear demonstration of our innovation, investment and commitment to our customers to take them beyond the hype to focus on deliverable business benefits,” said Neil Sutton, vice president, global portfolio, BT Global Services. “At the end of last year, BT responded to organisations’ cloud-based concerns by implementing its VDC On Demand solution across Europe. VDC Private is another major step forward in our ability to address the complex needs of our enterprise and corporate customers.”
