AWS WorkMail Email And Calendar Service Moves Into General Availability

Amazon Web Services has now moved its WorkMail email exchange service into general availability, after almost a year in preview.

WorkMail, akin to Microsoft Exchange, is a cloud-based email and calendar service, and supports Apple Mail and Microsoft Outlook clients. The service can be seen as a competitor to services like Gmail and Microsoft Exchange.

50GB storage

WorkMail works with a customer’s existing desktop and mobile clients, but comes at a cost of $4 per user per month. For that price, however, each user will get 50GB of storage.

Users can synchronise their mailboxes with iOS, Android, Amazon Fire, and Windows Phone devices (using the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol).

Amazon WorkMail also automatically encrypts data at rest with encryption keys the user controls, using the AWS Key Management Service (KMS). Amazon WorkMail also gives users the ability to retain full control over data locality by choosing the AWS region best suited to the user’s location.

But WorkMail is far from finishes. Writing on the AWS blog, evangelist Jeff Barr said: “We are working on interoperability support that will allow users of  Amazon WorkMail to benefit from a single Global Address Book, and to access free/busy calendar information across both environments. I’ll have more information on this feature in the near future.

“We are also working on an email journaling feature. This feature will allow you to use your existing email archiving system to capture and preserve all Amazon WorkMail communication.”
