New version of enterprise-ready cloud service arrives, coupled with optimised hardware platform

Hewlett-Packard has launched version 9.0 of the HP Helion CloudSystem, coupled with the new HP ConvergedSystem 700 platform optimised for the cloud service.

The product launch comes just days after the depressing news that the company will trim another 30,000 jobs from its enterprise division, ahead of its corporate split.

Helion CloudSystem

HP first launched its Helion cloud platform in May 2014. Essentially, HP Helion is made up of a portfolio of OpenStack cloud products and services that are designed to hel/p businesses build, manage and consume workloads in hybrid IT environments.

hpVersion 9.0 of the HP Helion CloudSystem comes with a development environment that can apparently be integrated with customers’ existing IT investments. HP states this will help businesses migrate their traditional applications to the cloud. It should also help develop and deploy cloud-native applications using multiple development languages.

“Enterprises are attracted by the promise of the cloud, however for many, the success of a cloud initiative hinges on the ability to integrate existing and new technology,” said Bill Hilf, senior vice president, HP Helion Product and Service Management.

“HP Helion CloudSystem 9.0 allows organisations to leverage existing infrastructure and expertise, manage traditional applications as cloud services, while supporting modern application development and delivery methods necessary to transition to a hybrid infrastructure.”

Interoperability

Version 9.0 is also compatible with the most commonly used operating systems, standard infrastructure and operations management tools, as well as popular hypervisors (Microsoft Hyper-V, Red Hat KVM and VMware ESXi etc).

Indeed, HP says that it has simplified integration with existing heterogeneous IT environments. And the latest version of HP Cloud Service Automation comes with a single management platform to control multiple cloud environments.

Meanwhile OpenStack software and Cloud Foundry APIs allow for access and control of cloud resources directly. Hybrid cloud management capabilities are available various private and public cloud environments, including Microsoft Azure, AWS, HP Helion Public Cloud, HP Helion OpenStack and Vmware. This provides customers with the ability to move workloads between AWS and their data centres using HP Helion Eucalyptus.

HP Helion CloudSystem 9.0 is optimised for the new HP ConvergedSystem 700, but it can also be deployed as standalone software supporting hardware from different vendors.

Both HP Helion CloudSystem 9.0 and HP ConvergedSystem 700 are available now as either standalone or integrated offerings.

In March this year HP expanded its roster of preconfigured systems for the Helion cloud portfolio. It unveiled the HP Helion Rack, a pre-tested solution to make it easier and faster for organisations to deploy and manage their private clouds.
