IT security firm Symantec has released its first cloud security offering designed to prevent loss and theft of data stored in the cloud.
Data Loss Prevention 14 (DLP 14) will also protect companies using Microsoft Office 365 cloud-based email.
The announcement follows a Gartner study in May which showed that Symantec suffered a second consecutive year of revenue decline, despite being the largest security software provider by revenue. Symantec’s total revenue was down 1.3 percent to $3.7 billion (£2.4bn) in 2014.
“Symantec Data Loss Prevention is a content-aware security technology that helps companies understand where their sensitive corporate information is being stored, how it’s being used and how to protect it against loss and theft,” said Symantec’s senior vice president of product development Amit Jasuja. “With the latest release, we are extending DLP to cloud email and storage to provide our customers the control and visibility they need to secure their sensitive information as they take full advantage of the cloud.”
DLP 14 will also be integrated with Box, a cloud storage service. Jasuja said that Box integration was one of the top requests seen from DLP customers.
“One of our biggest priorities at Box is keeping our customers’ information safe and secure,” said Justin Somaini, chief trust officer, Box. “We worked closely with Symantec, a founding member of our Box Trust ecosystem, to develop Symantec DLP for Box and are happy to bring Symantec’s reliable products to our customers.”
