WorldRemit, the leading international money transfer service, was selected by Vodafone as a global partner in a programme offering zero-fee international money transfers to Fiji. Through this partnership, WorldRemit enables mobile customers in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.S., and the U.K. to transfer funds to individuals in Fiji, for free. WorldRemit and Vodafone are waiving fees until 14th July for anyone who wants to support the people of Fiji, who have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and Cyclone Harold. WorldRemit is a trusted digital remittance service operating with more than 4 million customers around the globe. WorldRemit was selected by Vodafone as a partner to help expand the reach of this initiative, given its presence in over 150 countries.

The island nation of Fiji has been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and Tropical Cyclone Harold, which struck in April 2020. Both have resulted in a drastic decline in tourism which is the largest industry in Fiji, with an estimated 100,000 citizens of Fiji now unemployed. As part of the United Nations’ Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme, Vodafone Fiji forged a partnership with WorldRemit to encourage people around the world to send financial support to the people of Fiji.

“We expect to see a large increase in the number of transactions to Vodafone Fiji M-PAISA Mobile Money over the next few months, due to the devastating economic impact of the cyclone and COVID-19. Through this programme, we are making it easy for senders in five nations to quickly transfer money for free where it is most needed,” said Bryce Currie, Vice President of Business Development, Asia-Pacific at WorldRemit. “We’re proud to connect senders with their loved ones in Fiji now when they need help more than ever.”

The zero-fee money transfer programme is available through the WorldRemit website and mobile App, which can be downloaded via Google Play and the App Store. To send money via WorldRemit’s mobile money transfer service to Fiji, customers simply open the app and select Vodafone M-PAISA Mobile Money Transfer, then enter the receiver’s information. Recipients can either obtain the money through the Vodafone M-PAISA mobile money account or collect cash at local agents in Fiji, free of charge.

“With the impact of Tropical Storm Harold on top of COVID-19, many Fijian families are affected twice and they need this source of income more than ever before,” said Shailendra Prasad, Head of eCommerce and Corporate Affairs at Vodafone Fiji. “As the world navigates through a very difficult period in our history, the harsh realities of the economic and psychological impact on people is now becoming an everyday concern. We are pleased to have WorldRemit as our global digital partner in this endeavour.”
