US Economy Adds Almost a Million Jobs in March

United States (US) jobs grew by almost a million (916,000) in March as unemployment dropped to 6%.1 The right recruits build teams and boost performance, but recruitment can be easy to get wrong, and costly. Questionmark, the online assessment provider, is urging employers to ensure they have all the information they need before they decide who to hire.

The jobs increase is captured in the nonfarm payroll figures released by the US Department of Labor.2 Job growth has been linked to growing business confidence as the vaccine roll-out gathers pace.

Many employers need to recruit quickly to meet increased demand. However, 75% acknowledge they have made big hiring mistakes in the past.3 Replacing staff that leave quickly can cost anything from 30%4 to several hundred percent of that person’s salary.5 Wasted training, lost knowledge and additional recruitment fees all cause the cost to rack up.

When hiring, employers must ensure that:

  • Candidates have the skills they need for the job – new starters must have what it takes to hit the ground running. But 78% of recent job applicants admit to lying on their resume.6
  • New team members are the right fit for culture – employees that don’t integrate well tend not to last long. They risk detracting from the ethos employers are trying to foster.

Lars Pedersen, CEO of Questionmark, said: “Businesses need to meet increased demand as the economy reopens. Hiring the right staff will be at the center of their success. Now more than ever, it is vital that they choose people who will contribute positively to the culture they are creating.

“Testing the skills and attitudes of potential recruits gives employers the information they need to make the right choice. They can demonstrate a candidate has the skills they need. They can be confident a new hire has the attitudes to make a positive contribution to culture.”

By measuring the skills of candidates before hiring, employers can make a more informed decision about who to bring into the team. Assessments indicate whether potential recruits can do what they say they can and if they are likely to have the right attitude for the job.
